Is it Right For You?
The Gastric Sleeve Procedure is Effective
Due to the continuous increase of overweight individuals seeking help for their health quandaries, gastric sleeve medical treatments have been found to be a harmless and efficient method to lose weight. The term “gastric sleeve” is actually a shortened version of its original name “vertical sleeve gastrectomy”.
Initially the gastric sleeve surgery was used to resolve stomach ulcers. After the treatment was performed on stomach ulcer patients, it was discovered that they had significant weight loss. These patients not only lost weight, but they kept it off for long periods of time. Later on, it was utilized as the first part of the weight loss surgery called “duodenal switch”.
Initially, the gastric sleeve procedure was not considered as a stand alone weight loss surgery and was only part of the duodenal switch procedure. However, after series of studies, it was established that the gastric sleeve can be performed as a distinct weight reduction option since patients can lose substantial weight with it and the second stage of the duodenal switch operation is no longer necessary.
The Process
With this weight reduction surgery, the length and size of your stomach is reduced. It is a surgical treatment in which your stomach undergoes an operation to achieve a tube shape. It is performed along the side of your stomach, from your esophagus down to your pyloric valve and to your intestines. Bypassing is not a part of this surgical process.
The gastric sleeve surgery is useful in weight loss since the excess portion of your stomach is eliminated. Therefore, your stomach is made to become less expandable. Your food intake will be reduced and will result in a considerable reduction of weight. Because re-routing the intestines is not part of the process, many patients who have successfully undergone this surgery attest that the digestion issues as after affects are minimal.
Most patients can expect to lose 30 to 50% of their excess body weight over a 6 – 12 month period with the sleeve gastrectomy alone. The timing of the second procedure will vary according to the degree of weight loss, typically 6 – 18 months.
Recovery is rather quick, it only requires of 2 hospitalization days and the patient will be able to do his daily task round the 5th and 7th day after surgery.
